Coral (Moonga)

Coral is one of the well-known organic gems. In addition to its use in ornamental carvings, it is also used in jewelry. Corals are of two types- Calcareous coral and Conchiolin coral. It has a Mohs hardness level of 3.5. The red color of Coral (Moonga) belongs to the Calcareous coral type. It is one of the 9 Navratan gemstones. The most valuable red coral is an intense red coral generally called oxblood red. Because Italy is the main Coral marketing center, many coral color terms are Italian. 

Corals from the Mediterranean and Asia look like miniature trees. Generally, corals are fashioned as carvings, cameos, and cabochons.

Coral might be impregnated to improve luster and dyed to improve color. It is generally dipped in melted wax to improve appearance. Glass, plastic, porcelain, and Gilson Imitation Coral are one of the main coral imitations. 

Astrologists suggest coral to boost his/her confidence, and courage and remove negative energies from their lives. People prefer to wear Japanese corals which are dark orangy red in color.
